This is the memorial to Admiral Cuthbert Collingwood (1748-1810) at Tynemouth, Newcastle-upon-Tyne (which is a lovely place).
Despite having a weed‘s Christian name, Collingwood was an A-list military hero, distinguishing himself particularly at the battle of Trafalgar (1805) and prompting wee Lord Nelson (5’4″) to remark: “See how that noble fellow Collingwood carries his ship into action!”
This is as good a time as any to note that Cuthbert is not the only Collingwood to come from the north-east, represent his country with courage and honour, and vanquish an historic foe:
From his monument, Admiral Collingwood has a spectacularly good view of the River Tyne, North and South Shields, and the dreaded Black Middens. Although he must be perishingly cold up there.
