The seventeenth of May, 2011: overheard

Scene: a waiting room. Enter a man, walking carefully, as though brittle. A lady in a wheelchair manoeuvres herself so as not to obstruct the only remaining seat. You can sit down now, she said. The man replied:

No, I’ll stand for a bit. I’ll sit down soon, don’t you worry. But each has its own pleasures.

That made me smile, when I was not in a smiling frame of mind.
